Despacio

Who said there ain’t no artist-run spaces in Costa Rica? Six local artists will take over the Despacio premises for two months, operating Despacio as an artist-run space under the name Karaoke todos los días. Things are bound to change.

Thoughts
Information

Artist-run spaces are excellent platforms for artists, leading to new opportunities. Directed with the intimate knowledge of what artists need to develop work and how to approach a public, such independent art spaces are a great alternative to the exhibition-focused models of museums.

By their very nature, art museums focus on existing art, art that is considered valuable, art that has already gained its spurs and must be preserved for the future. The spaces directed by artists, on the other hand, are focused on the dynamics of contemporary art, without being sure that this same art will also be the art of tomorrow.

Giving the reins of such a space to an artist leads to a different and often closer relationship with other artists. The choices that are made tend to be more individualistic. The powerful personal influence of the artist helps to develop a diverse program that is not driven by visitor numbers.

Each artist-run space has a collective identity related mainly to its artistic creation and, ultimately, the chosen forms of how to present the artistic creation and how to communicate the happenings and exhibitions.

Karaoke todos los días focuses mainly on the identity and importance of artistic spaces in Costa Rica—and its current dearth of such spaces. The selected six artists are known to be attentive to new developments in the contemporary visual arts field of Central America, as well as to new models of exhibitions, interaction with other disciplines, and relevant themes inside and outside of art.

In the collective memory, scores have always been related to melodies and songs but rarely to corporeal movement. For this reason, Erina Libertad does a broad investigation of how to relate human motion and transfer it to scores and create corporeal melodies.

A simple daily action, movement, has a significant weight in the artistic practice of Libertad. She studies the physical aspects in communities, where she focuses on body language and its development over time.
