Video Art Manual, 2015
Installation View: Keren Cytter

In "Video Art Manual" Keren Cytter undermines the relationship between actors, setting and camera as typical for her handling of the medium film. Thematically the approximately 15 minutes feature is about the history of video art. Instead of offering a historical analysis of the medium and its development in the last forty years Cytter focuses on the conditions of how contemporary video art will be produced, installed and consumed. By doing this her video work can literally be seen as a manual to her own work.

El hábito de estrofas, 2011
Installation View: Fabiola Carranza
Carranza hand painted nineteen signs for ambulatory and home-operated businesses in his ancestral hometown Atenas, Costa Rica. Each sign was made in accordance to the demands of its owner. She exchanged the signs she crafted for the originals and exhibited at Despacio. She also invited local vendor, Idalia Martinez, for whom she had made a sign to sell food at the opening reception.

Everybody talks about becoming an artist. But what happens when you give up the calling? Can you cease to be an artist? Where do ideas go when they no longer make it into art? Do they float around, searching for an artist who has none of their own?

Things are bound to change. Once again, Despacio transforms into an artist-run space. During the month of August and September, the artists Marcela Araya, Kenneth Coronado, Priscila Gómez, Flavia Sánchez, Yuli Yamagata, and Ivanna Yujimets run Despacio under the name La próxima.

For Vida Privada, the artist Johanna Schaible spent many days with three tenants whose homes are protected by grills, documenting the worlds and stories of their everyday lives. While her presence may seem intrusive, her choice to illustrate these scenes transforms each space, preserving its intimacy in a way that photos would not. This series of illustrations, which will be arranged into three unique books, will briefly be presented at Despacio before being gifted to the residents it portrays.

San Keller might be late for Labor Day, but he’s never late for work. The artist’s first Latin American retrospective will showcase a body of work full of wit, humor, and a keen sense for letting art take over everyday situations. Over the course of four days in San José, the artist will revive performances inspired by specific workplaces, joining forces with a hairdresser, a physical therapist, a bar owner, a merchant, and even local cops.
