Though conceptual thinking often comes to the forefront of artistic practice and reception, this opening section of the program will explore corners of the art world that are less concerned with making sense, and more with breaking it. In parallel, artists with a penchant for testing the limits of their practice will be invited to interact with Despacio’s archives and gallery space.
How can absence function as a creative generator in the practice of art? And to what extent can this practice access truth without passing through conventional logic? In many ways, art builds its own forms of reasoning, finding truth in feeling, difference, and plurality rather than linear demonstrations or rational argumentation. Art does not make sense, but opens it up to us. It is this unbound logic, this meaning in absence, that Despacio will seek to explore over the course of 2016.
The Central Archive, containing over fifty conceptual works of art gathered from across the world, will be accessible over the course of the entire year and punctually integrated into the program’s exhibitions.
The Absence of Logic is the first of three acts exploring the idea of absence at Despacio from 2016 to 2018. It will be followed by The Absence of Division (2017) and The Absence of Art (2018).
