Trained in various fine art disciplines, Andy Retana perceives his artistic practice as experimentation with process and medium without a definitive end. Through the interaction of space and objects, the work fuels and explores authentic expression. A professional ceramist, Retana in particular utilizes ceramic as an instrument for questioning everything around him, challenging stigmas regarding masculinity and the mundane.
From his small insect-shaped molds—using insects he personally hunts—to decorated urinals, Retana amplifies and deepens the aesthetic and conceptual limits of sculpture, discovering what it is to have a holistic artistic practice.
Andy Retana was born in 1990 in San José, Costa Rica, where he lives and works. Learn more about Retana on Instagram or Facebook, or contact him by email.
The artist is part of the residency program La última which starts on May 2018.
