The Libraries in Residence project will serve as a complement to the program. Libraries open up opportunities for continuous exchange between artists and curators, one in which each group’s specific roles are blurred or even abandoned. Although the libraries will function independently, they will echo the program’s main principles.
Most archives are banished to remote corners of the institutions that house them. This is not the case at Despacio, where they share center stage with exhibition space. The program’s Central Archive will be displayed in three one year-long iterations designed to function in ways analogous to human memory. With each archive offering a vibrant universe of entry points to the past, viewers will discover memories they have yet to live, and live memories they never dreamed of discovering.
The Pursuit of Absence, conceived by Sandino Scheidegger, will unfold over the course of three years. It will begin with The Absence of Logic (2016), followed by The Absence of Division (2017), and conclude with The Absence of Art (2018).
